Finding the Sprinkles in the Everyday
Have you ever felt so bogged down with work or life that it was difficult to find the little sprinkles of joy? I have been there and it is rough. I do my best to stay consistent with a gratitude journal, some mindfulness practice focusing on being in the moment, and connecting with family or friends to hear about the good in their lives.
The most favorite part of being a pediatric physical therapist is the days I get to see students. They are the ones that are able to share their joys with me and it lifts me up. Whether they are sharing a story about the past weekend, a funny joke they just learned, or just smiling when they see me, it always seems to lift me up. The past year of distance learning had taken that student interaction away and it took me awhile to feel the impact.
I have worked in pediatrics my entire career and I sometimes have to remind myself, parents, and staff to appreciate and celebrate the little wins for our students. Here are some of the little wins that come to mind:
Students remembering and anticipating their own personal care routine while accepting physical assistance
Transitions between activities with excitement
Students advocating for what they want or need
Watching friendships blossoming on the playground or during group activities
When students share what they’ve learned or what they found interesting that day
Kids being kids
My role is to foster physical development, provide opportunities for growth and exploration, and create a safe, meaningful, and functional environment for students to thrive. I don’t believe I’m here to “fix” anyone or to strive for “normal”. We sometimes forget to ask our students what they want to do or what goals they have. Remember to ask, be curious, and you will find a whole world of ideas that can be explored.
What sprinkles did you find in your day? Or week? I’d love to hear about it and be sure to share it with someone!
